A timer switch runs a circuit on a schedule without anyone present. In Egypt the highest-value uses are irrigation pumps before sunrise, water heaters limited to the hours hot water is actually needed, and signage or security lighting on a daily cycle. It removes both the need to remember and the cost of forgetting.
Where a timer pays for itself fastest
Water heaters
An electric water heater left permanently on reheats its tank all day and night to maintain temperature nobody is using. Scheduling it to heat for a couple of hours before the household needs hot water is often the single largest saving available in a domestic property.
Irrigation and water pumps
Watering is most effective early, before the heat of the day drives evaporation. A timer runs the pump at the right hour every day regardless of whether anyone is on site — which matters on farms and second properties.
Signage and security lighting
Shop signage that switches on at dusk and off at closing, every day, without staff intervention. The saving is modest per day and substantial per year.
Choosing a timer
- Current rating — must exceed the load, with headroom for motor starting surge. Pumps draw several times running current at start.
- Poles — 2P fully isolates live and neutral, which is the safer specification for pumps and heaters.
- Mechanical or digital — mechanical timers are simple and tolerant; digital ones allow multiple daily events and different weekday schedules.
- Wi-Fi — lets you change the schedule from your phone rather than at the board, and is genuinely useful on properties you are not at every day.
A note on inrush current
This is where timer installations most often fail. A pump motor can draw five to seven times its running current for a fraction of a second at start. A timer rated exactly at the running current will have its contacts damaged over repeated starts, and it will fail welded closed — leaving the load permanently on, which is the worst possible failure mode for a heater.
Size the timer above the starting current, not the running current, or switch through a contactor rated for the job.
Combining with protection
A timer decides when a circuit runs. It does not protect it. A pump on a timer should still sit behind a breaker sized to its cable, and on an unstable supply behind a voltage protector — a pump restarting into a sag is exactly the scenario that destroys motors.
