Unstable mains is the most common cause of appliance failure in Egypt, and it is not only spikes that do damage. Sustained under-voltage forces motors in fridges, air conditioners and pumps to draw more current, overheating windings until they fail.

These devices monitor the supply continuously and disconnect the circuit when voltage leaves the set range, reconnecting automatically once it stabilises.

Setting them up

• Adjustable thresholds — typically set around 170V lower and 270V upper for a 220V supply.
• Reconnection delay — a delay of a minute or more protects compressors from restarting against pressure.
