How to Choose a Circuit Breaker in Egypt: MCB, RCBO and Ratings Explained

Choose a circuit breaker by the cable it protects, not by the appliance you want to run. A breaker exists to stop the wiring overheating, so its amp rating must match the cable's safe capacity. Fitting a larger breaker to stop nuisance tripping removes the protection and is the most common — and most dangerous — mistake in Egyptian installations.

What a circuit breaker actually protects

This is the point most buyers get wrong. A circuit breaker does not protect your air conditioner, your fridge or your television. It protects the cable buried in the wall behind them.

When current exceeds what a cable can safely carry, the cable heats. Heat degrades the insulation, and degraded insulation eventually arcs or ignites. The breaker interrupts the circuit before that happens. So the rating is dictated by the cross-section of the cable, not by the size of the load you would like to connect.

If a breaker trips repeatedly, the correct responses are to reduce the load on that circuit, split it into two circuits, or replace the cable with a heavier one and then raise the breaker. Simply fitting a bigger breaker leaves an under-sized cable with no protection at all.

MCB, RCCB and RCBO — what the letters mean

  • MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) — protects against overload and short circuit. It does not protect a person from electric shock.
  • RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) — detects current leaking to earth, which is what happens when someone touches a live conductor. It does not protect against overload.
  • RCBO — both functions in one module. For bathrooms, kitchens, water heaters and outdoor sockets, this is the one to specify.

A common Egyptian setup uses MCBs on lighting circuits and RCBOs on wet areas and socket circuits. If your board contains only MCBs, there is no earth-leakage protection anywhere in the property.

Choosing the amp rating

As a working guide for domestic circuits:

  • 6A–10A — lighting circuits.
  • 16A — general socket circuits and small appliances.
  • 20A–32A — water heaters, larger air conditioners, kitchen circuits.
  • 40A–63A — main incomers and sub-distribution.
  • 80A–100A — main supply on larger properties.

Always confirm the cable size with a qualified electrician before ordering. The rating printed on a breaker means nothing if the cable behind it cannot carry that current.

Poles: 1P, 1P+N and 2P

A single-pole breaker interrupts the live conductor only. A two-pole breaker interrupts live and neutral together, fully isolating the circuit — which matters when working on it, and matters more where neutral integrity is uncertain.

For a domestic board on a stable supply, 1P or 1P+N is normal. For water heaters, outdoor circuits and anywhere isolation must be absolute, 2P is the safer specification.

Smart breakers: worth it or not?

Wi-Fi breakers add remote switching, energy monitoring per circuit, and in some models automatic reclosing after a transient fault clears. Three situations make them genuinely useful in Egypt:

  • Second properties and chalets — restore a tripped circuit without driving there.
  • Irrigation and water pumps — automatic reclosing keeps a pump running after a brief supply dip.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit a bigger breaker to stop it tripping?

No. Repeated tripping means the circuit is overloaded or faulty. A larger breaker leaves the cable unprotected and is a fire risk.

Do I need an RCBO in every room?

Not in every room, but you should have earth-leakage protection covering bathrooms, kitchens, outdoor sockets and any circuit feeding water heaters.

What amp breaker for an air conditioner in Egypt?

It depends on the unit's rated current and the cable feeding it — commonly 16A to 32A. Check the nameplate on the unit and have an electrician confirm the cable size.

Are Wi-Fi circuit breakers safe?

Yes, when installed correctly. They contain the same protective mechanism as a standard breaker; the connectivity is an addition, not a replacement. Installation must still be done by a qualified electrician.
